A pesca ilícita e o seu impacto nas pequenas comunidades da África litoral

Um dos principais objectivos da Sea Shepherd, ao longo dos últimos três anos, tem sido a criação de parcerias com autoridades policiais locais de forma a reunir esforços para acabar com a pesca ilegal. As frotas comerciais de pesca têm sistematicamente tirado partido da incapacidade financeira dos Estados africanos empobrecidos para controlar eficazmente o seu espaço marítimo. Nas nossas campanhas mais recentes em África (Libéria, Gabão e Tanzânia), conseguimos expor operações de pesca ilegal e agir contra as mesmas. Isto permitiu que pequenas comunidades do litoral, dependentes da pesca para a sua sobrevivência, recuperassem o seu espaço marítimo e restabelecessem o equilíbrio dos ecossistemas afectados.

Biografia:
O capitão Alex Cornelissen participou em mais de 25 campanhas da Sea Shepherd, incluindo cinco viagens ao Antárctico para deter caçadores de baleias japoneses. Veio para a Sea Shepherd em 2002 como cozinheiro-chefe do Farley Mowat, na altura o navio principal da organização. Ao longo de mais de 14 anos, foi membro da tripulação da Sea Shepherd, em várias embarcações da frota, tendo sido promovido sucessivamente até se tornar primeiro oficial do capitão Paul Watson e depois capitão em 2006.
Serviu nos navios sem parar até ao fim de 2007, ano em que se tornou director de operações nas Ilhas Galápagos. Em Janeiro de 2014, o capitão Alex Cornelissen tornou-se CEO da Sea Shepherd Global e é actualmente responsável por todos os movimentos de navios da frota da Sea Shepherd Global. É presidente do conselho de administração da Sea Shepherd Alemanha, Luxemburgo, Holanda e Suíça e membro do conselho de grande parte de outros países onde a Sea Shepherd se estabeleceu.

IUU fishing and the impact on small coastal communities in Africa

Sea Shepherd’s main focus the past three years has been to set up partnerships with local law enforcement and combine efforts to halt illegal fishing. Commercial fishing fleets have been systematically taking advantage of the financial inability of impoverished African states to effectively patrol their waters. On our recent Africa campaigns (Liberia, Gabon and Tanzania) we have been able to expose IUU fishing operations and act against it. This has resulted in small coastal communities dependant on fishing for their livelihood to reclaim their waters and re-establish the balance in the affected eco-systems.

Bio:
Captain Cornelissen has participated in more than 25 Sea Shepherd campaigns, including five trips down to the Antarctic to stop the Japanese whale poachers. He first joined Sea Shepherd in 2002 as Chief Cook on the Farley Mowat, at that time the organization’s flagship vessel. Over 14 years he served as a member of the Sea Shepherd crew on a number of ships in Sea Shepherd’s fleet, working his way up to the bridge to become the First Officer under Captain Paul Watson and appointed Captain in 2006.
He served nonstop on board the ships until the end of 2007 when he started working as the Director of Operations in the Galapagos Islands. In January 2014, Captain Cornelissen became the CEO of Sea Shepherd Global and is now responsible for all the movements of the vessels in Sea Shepherd’s Global fleet. Captain Cornelissen is the president of the board of directors for Sea Shepherd Germany, Luxemburg, Netherlands and Switzerland and serves as a board member in most of the other established Sea Shepherd countries.
He is proud to be able to fight side by side with the most inspiring and passionate people he knows.
